Breast Cancer Awareness: Understanding Your Options for Reconstructive Surgery

Dear Patients,
As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s essential to focus not only on early detection and treatment but also on the recovery journey that follows. For many women, reconstructive surgery plays a significant role in healing—physically, emotionally, and mentally—after a breast cancer diagnosis.

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to restore the shape and look of the breast after a mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) or lumpectomy (partial removal). This surgery is an option for women who wish to restore their breast contour after cancer treatment.

Types of reconstructive surgery:

There are two main approaches to breast reconstruction, and choosing the right one depends on personal preference, medical history, and the stage of recovery. Each method has its advantages, and a surgeon can help determine the best option based on your individual needs.

1. Implant-Based Reconstruction

This involves using silicone or saline implants to recreate the breast shape.

2. Autologous or “Flap” Reconstruction

This method takes tissue from another part of your body (like the abdomen or back) to form a new breast.

When can reconstruction occur?

When it is time for a reconstructive procedure, there are many factors to consider that will best determine the ideal time for your surgery. You can reach out to our medical staff at anytime to discuss your needs.

1. Immediate Reconstruction

The surgery is performed at the same time as the mastectomy or lumpectomy.

2. Delayed Reconstruction

The procedure is done months or years after the initial surgery, once all treatments, such as radiation, are complete.

What are the benefits of Breast Reconstructive Surgery?

• Restored Confidence: For some, reconstructing the breast can help them feel more like themselves again.

• Balanced Appearance: Reconstruction helps restore symmetry, particularly when only one breast is affected.

• Improved Clothing Fit: Many women find that bras and clothing fit better after reconstruction.

Remember: Early detection saves lives.
