My dear friend, Dr. Hinika, a general surgeon based in Los Angeles and originally from Ethiopia, identified an urgent need for a hospital in his hometown. Motivated by his commitment to serving his community, he established the Negele Arci General Hospital and Medical College in 2018, bridging a critical healthcare gap in a region that previously lacked a hospital within a 50-mile radius.

I had the privilege of attending the hospital’s inauguration, where I contributed by performing reconstructive surgeries. This year marked a significant milestone as the institution celebrated the graduation of its inaugural class of medical students. I was honored to participate in the festivities, and I also took the opportunity to perform surgeries and share my expertise with the graduating students.

Large Hemangioma on 4 year old patient in Ethiopia
A large hemangioma in the neck on a 4-year-old girl. She was taken to a numerous doctors but no one was willing to remove it.
After the procedure, she was all smiles, and her mother was relieved to see her child free from the hemangioma and the associated discomfort.

1 day after surgery his swelling was minimal and will be ready to take off the bandages in a short period of time.

The Parents and Patients

On the final day, I had the privilege of meeting with my patients, who shared their heartfelt gratitude for the procedures. Hearing their stories and witnessing the profound impact the surgeries had on their lives was deeply moving. Their appreciation underscored the importance of this work and left a lasting impression on me.
